At the heart of any solar power system are the PV panels and they are the part of the system that does the actual conversion of sunlight into electricity.
They do this by utilizing a collection of solar cells that take advantage of the photovoltaic effect.
This phenomenon occurs when certain materials are placed in sunlight and generate a small current as a result.
This small current can then be harvested and used to power your home.
Even though the current from each solar cell is small, when a large group of them are connected together inside of these PV panels, the overall power is quite impressive.
Most homes will need a fairly large collection of these PV panels to generate all of the power needed. The good news is that these PV panels are much more productive than they were in years past and can generate far more power from the same sunlight as older panels.
This means you’ll need fewer of them to generate your power and this can also help to lower the cost of your system. These newer PV panels are also more productive in lower sunlight conditions and can generate more power at sunrise, sunset and on cloudy days as a result.
Older panels were typically inactive during these times and were only really able to generate power during the very sunniest of days. This means that the newer PV panels cannot only generate more power when the sun is shining, but can do it for more of the day. This all adds up to much more power for your home from these newer PV panels.
Another recent innovation in PV panels involves the way the power they generate is converted and utilized by your home. PV panels generate a DC current from sunlight.
This DC current needs to be converted to AC current by an inverter in order to be used by your home. In older systems these inverters were typically large and located near the power distribution panel in your home.
The DC current from the solar panels had to be routed to the inverter through a series of long wires and this caused some of the power to be lost on its journey from the PV panels to the inverter. In some systems this loss could be as high as 15%.
This meant you could not use all the power your PV panels were generating for your home. Some of the modern solar panels fix this problem by including a smaller inverter in the design of the PV panels themselves.
This allows each of the solar panels to convert the DC current they are producing to AC current the home can use right at the panel. This AC current is then sent directly to the home for use. By doing the conversion at the solar panel you eliminate the loss of power the older systems suffered and also make the system easier to expand.
