When the sun is shining and your batteries are at full charge the excess electricity runs your utility company meter from backwards. Then when the sun is not shining and your batteries have been depleted the utility will supply your home with electricity and will run your meter forward.
Solar generators are a great form of security if the electrical grid goes down. The rest of the houses in your neighborhood will be black, but yours will still have the solar panels and your batteries to power your house.
